For 9 years in a row, my friend Christy has held an Annual Ornament and Cookie Swap Party at Christmas. It is the most fun, and I really look forward to it every year. Each year around Thanksgiving, I start scoping out cookie magazines for the perfect recipe. I've made a variety of different cookies over the years, but I love to make at least one batch that I decorate.
This year, my fancy batch was going to be "Roly Poly Santas." These fun, festive little guys looked easy enough to make. And super cute to boot!

I didn't venture to make the Star and Moon
Santa's. I would have, but I couldn't find a good cookie cutter.
So last night I went on a mission to the store to get my ingredients, and find red "paste" food coloring. They should tell you that this is hard (albeit impossible) to find at 6p the night before the party when you really only have time to go to Publix. And they should also tell you that it is imperative that you use "paste" food coloring instead of "liquid" food coloring. I should've known better...but apparently when a recipe calls for "paste" food coloring, it's because anything else will change the consistency in the batter and make for "Runny" Santa's.
But I digress...
I trucked on, mixing every drop of red liquid food coloring I had into the dough so the batter would be red, and not pink. Trying not to break my wrist, and resisting the temptation to just dig in and mix with my hands. I really didn't want red hands for the party, so I just used a spoon. And lots of elbow grease.
It was finally mixed, and I proceeded with rolling up the little guys and baking them. Apparently I didn't push the little dough balls together enough, because even after cooling, when I moved them, all but 4 fell apart (probably had more to do with the food coloring). But I decorated them all anyway...just for fun. What else was I going to do with all that frosting?! And I left them on the counter (covered with wax paper) so the icing could harden over night.
This morning, while I was getting ready for work, I noticed my monkey was MIA. Typically he just lays on the bed while I get ready. I looked up, and he was no where to be found. And it was eerily quiet. I panicked!
I ran into the kitchen and checked on my Santa's. Everything looked ok...Owen and I had eaten part of one last night, so that one was in pieces - and I didn't think anything of it. But then I looked closer.
There seems to be a cookie monster in my house. Upon closer inspection, there was one cookie that had one red Santa hat, but no Santa body. A quick glance down at the floor, and what to my wondering eyes should appear...
But one Cookie Monster licking his chops and smacking his gums...

*This is not the actual photo of him this morning. I was too angry to snap a pic. But it is quite impossible to resist that face.
The remaining cookies were salvaged and untouched by the monkey, and a few will appear at the party. Maybe next year I'll take the time to find the red paste food coloring and keep them out of monkey's reach.
Oh - and while I was on the phone with mom this morning, telling her of the cookie antics,
Tas decided he'd better finish what he started.
He ate the hat.
